Updated: May 31
Learning new tips and ways to maximize your fitness endeavors allows you to get over your plateaus and consistently progress towards your peak potential.
Below are 10 tips that will allow you to develop a more structured and direct method in creating your fitness program.
When considering fitness goals, they often appear daunting and require significant time investment. As a personal trainer, I prioritize understanding my clients' goals. Establishing a well-organized daily plan is the key for success. Many aim to achieve a "shredded" physique before summer without knowing where to begin, resulting in inadequate nutrition and ineffective exercise routines. This trend of striving for a "summer shred" persists until individuals gain the necessary knowledge and guidance to develop a resulting workout and dietary regimen.
Why is a structured program so important?
When aiming for a goal, it's crucial to seek out the most effective strategies to attain it. Developing a program that delivers the ideal stimulus to the body, thereby achieving the desired benefits, underscores the importance of specific workouts, rest days, and nutrition. Transform your body by stimulating it in a tailored manner aligned with your goals.
Tip #1: S.M.A.R.T
Tip #2: Principle of specificity
Tip #3: Macrocycle
Tip #1: S.M.A.R.T goals
S- specific
Are you establishing goals that specifically address areas requiring enhancement?
This should be your primary focus when starting your fitness journey. Ensure that your goals are tailored to target specific areas for improvement.
M- Measurable
Are the goals you are working towards measurable? How are you going to measure them?
When goal planning you need to also plan out when and how you are going to measure progress towards the end goal. It may help to create short progress goals that lead to the outcome goal.
A-achievable
Is the goal achievable? Too far-fetched?
Goals should not be easily attained. However, with dedicated effort, they should be reachable. Craft goals demanding both time and effort yet remain within the realm of achievability.
R- Relevant
Your goals should align with a broader objective and priority. For instance, a client I coached aimed to bench press 95 pounds by month's end with a focus on strength gains. Surpassing this goal within 2.5 weeks not only enhanced his strength but also contributed to his athleticism. The point lies in ensuring that your fitness objectives extend beyond the gym, fostering overall health and well-being.
T- Timely
The goals you are looking to achieve should have a specific timeframe or deadline for completion. Create smaller goals within the timeframe that are also attainable that will propel you towards the outcome goal.
Tip #2: The Principle of Specificity
This may be the biggest thing holding you back from achieving your fitness aspiration.
The principle of specificity in fitness explains that the adaptation we undergo are specific to the type of training undertaken.
So why are you doing 25 reps per set of barbell back squat if you are trying to improve your 1 rep max?
You need to create a workout regimen that will stimulate the body to achieve the adaptations you are looking for. For example, someone training for maximum strength/power will likely train with higher volume and less intensity, while someone training for endurance will train higher intensities and less volume.
Tip #3: Macrocycle
To start, what is a macrocycle?
A macrocycle starts with a goal and is a plan over the span of a year to achieve the goal.
Why do I need to use a macrocycle?
A macrocycle consists of micro cycles (monthly plans) that allow the body to adapt to a new or different stimulus each month.
Training at different intensities and different volumes each month will allow the body to consistently change and adapt to the stress you place on it.
Incorporate this into your program and in a year, with hard work, you will be a new person.
